Various acids may be used to etch metal. Electrolytic etching may also be used where DC current drives the etching process.

  • Iron(III) chloride (ferric chloride): This acid is commonly used to etch copper PC boards. It is also good for etching steel and stainless steel. It is fairly safe and easily available.
