# We want permutations, not combinations, so "permutations of {0,4,5,7,9}".
# Permutations of 4 items from a set of 5 items, {0,4,5,7,9}.
# Order matter and items may not repeat, so 5P4.

# * Combinations: order does not matter and replacements are not allowed.
# * Permutation: order matters and replacements are not allowed. When n = r this reduces to n!.

O, Stick of Christmas...

  1. O, Tannenbaum
  2. O, Weihnachtsstock. Why is the Christmas song called "O Tannenbaum" instead of "O Weihnachtsbaum"? "Tannenbaum" doesn't mean "Christmas Tree". I think "Tannenbaum" literally means "fir tree". "Weihnachtsstock" means "candy cane" or "Christmas stick". The word "weihn" seems to mean "Christmas" when used as a root. The root "weihn" itself means something related to religious devotion or consecration. I think literally it means "path" or "way". Perhaps "weihn" and English "way" have similar origins.

Violet's Dinosaur Song

There are bones in your toes! Ain't that neat?!
There are bones in your toes that taste so sweet!
There are bones in your toes that will make a tasty treat!
There are bones in your toes that I'm going to eat!
...Nom! Nom! Nom! (tickle tickle tickle) Nom!
Now there are no more toes on your stumpy feet1

Violet's Song

Violet made this song up. She was 2 and 9 months old. I helped clean up and fill out the melody a bit. Sort of follows "For He is a Jolly Good Fellow" or "The Bear Went Over the Mountain". In fact, now that I think about it, I think it's almost exactly the same.

Update! now I remember that the first version of Violet's song featured penguins instead of flowers. The chorus was, "We have to water the penguins!". She sang this in the tub as she poured water over a rubber penguin. A few days later I heard her sing the version with flowers. The refrain, "because it's fun to do!", was the same.

// We have to water the penguins! (This was the first version I heard her sing.)
// We have to water the flowers! (The next time I heard her sing it she was watering a flower.)

go go go go go outside
go go go and see the sky
go and see other people
go and feel the sunshine
so go go go go we must go
go and smell the air
go go go out there
go where danger lurks at the top of the stairs.

Extemporary Design

extemporary
See extemporaneous.
extemporaneous
A speech made with with little preparation. Notes might cover a few big topic points, but little detail. Details of speech are given conversationally. Often contrasted with "impromptu", while similar, an impromptu speech is made with no warning and has no preparation or plan at all. In practical use the two words seem to be used similarly. One wonders if the English language really needs two separate words with such a subtle distinction and where that distinction hardly seems all that valuable.
