# capacitor picofarad codes

Small value capacitors are marked with a three digit code that indicates their capacitance in picofarads. The code is basically scientific notation. The first two digits are the **significand coefficient** (the most significant digits of the value) and the third digit is the power of 10 exponent. So a capacitor marked as **105** should be interpreted as **10 × 10 ^{5} picofarads** or

**10E5 picofarads**in

*E notation*. That's a million picofarads, which is also called 1 microfarad (1 uF).

Note that ceramic multilayer and tantalum capacitors can look alike. Tantalum are usually polarized. The positive terminal will be marked with a line and a + symbol.
