One of Linux's weaknesses is printer support. With CUPS you can attach to a remove Windows SMB shared printer, but finding drivers can be tough. The best way to approach the problem is to find a printer that is known to work and has drivers built-in to your Linux distribution. See OpenPrinting.org Suggested Printers.

Dell printers are rebranded Lexmark printers. Linux supports many models of Lexmark printers, so the trick is to figure out which Lexmark printer your Dell printer really is.

The "Dell Laser 1710" printer works with the "LEXMARK Optra E321" printer driver. I'm not sure if this is the best driver, but it works.
