capacitor picofarad codes

Small value capacitors are marked with a three digit code that indicates their capacitance in picofarads. The code is basically scientific notation. The first two digits are the significand coefficient (the most significant digits of the value) and the third digit is the power of 10 exponent. So a capacitor marked as 105 should be interpreted as 10 × 105 picofarads or 10E5 picofarads in E notation. That's a million picofarads, which is also called 1 microfarad (1 uF).

Note that ceramic multilayer and tantalum capacitors can look alike. Tantalum are usually polarized. The positive terminal will be marked with a line and a + symbol.
