When you see a flash of lightning begin to count. When you hear the thunder stop the count. Thunder travels approximately 1/3 kilometer per second, or 1/5 mile per second. So if you counted 5 seconds then the lightning was a mile away. If you counted 3 seconds then the lightning was a kilometer away.
